The project is conceived as a layered collaboration rather than a singular architectural gesture. Architecture, art and light operate in quiet dialogue, allowing multiple authorships to coexist. Two overlapping grids were used to accommodate the program on a complicated octagonal-shaped site. Despite it being in the busy heart of the Atlantic Seaboard, the residents have complete privacy from the neighbours. This is due to the solid balustrades that allow views of the ocean while blocking out the surrounding roofscape. The family desired a house that embodies the original character of the house and neighbourhood. We strived to modernize the house without losing its original Mid-Century bones, such as the living room's pitched timber ceiling.
